New-born star for new-born King

In the east we scan the night
to trace the stars and watch their light.
One night, in "Hebrew house",
we saw a new-born star.
"It is the promised Star", we said.

New-born star for new-born King,
our costliest treasures we must bring
to go and find and worship him.

Long the road but great the joy
that led towards this palace boy,
but not in halls of Jerusalem -
they pointed us to Bethlehem.

New-born star for new-born King,
our costliest treasures now we bring
and lay them down and worship him.

But Herod is a man of hate -
his wife and sons he’d killed of late.
To any threatened rival king
no worship would this tyrant bring
but seek him out for violent fate.

We traveled back to eastern lands
with joyful hearts and ready hands -

New-born star for new-born King.
He isn’t just the Jewish King
but ours as now we daily bring
our lives to worship him.
