Alibi

No, God,
I didn't do it,
and I don't know
who did!
The church means too much
to me
to even think
of such a crime.
In all life's highest moments
and deepest depths
it has been there.
I've done my bit -
put in the plate
what I could,
gone
when I could.

Perhaps,
I could have done better,
but then...
May the minister do his job,
and the Sunday School teachers,
the youth leaders, too.
It's a fine work they do -
keep up the good work, I say!

What's that, God?
You want me,
my life, my service?
Not me, Lord!
But bless our workers -
and I hope you find
who's killing the church.
